Amsterdam is a very popular tourist destination, the architecture, history, and culture attract millions of visitors Traditional Dutch Foodsevery year. Something that you might not know before you visit the city, though, is that there are some extremely delicious foods for you to sample. Here is our list of some of the best traditional Dutch foods that you should enjoy during your stay.

Bitterballen

The ultimate pub food snack, bitterballen are deep-fried meatballs. They are usually served with mustard and they are typically made with beef and veal. Order some with a couple of beers for a perfect afternoon snack.

Stroopwafel

The Dutch know how to make truly delicious sweet treats, and stroopwafels really are one of the best. Made from two thin waffles with a layer of sugary syrup in the middle, these treats really melt in the mouth. Enjoy them warm from a street vendor for the best experience.

Haring

We know that it sounds a bit disgusting but raw herring really is a treat, and we really encourage you to give it a go. There are herring carts (haringhandels) all over the city, try a broodje haring, herring served in a sandwich with pickles and onions, you won’t regret it.

Oliebollen

Ok, so this literally translates as oil balls, but don’t let that put you off. These are deep-fried dumplings, which are sweet and are dusted in powdered sugar to make them even sweeter. They sometimes even have fruit pieces in them. You will probably only find them around the Christmas period, but if you are in the city over the festive period you should definitely give them a try.

Ontbijtkoek

This is a delicious ginger cake which is served in loaves. It’s so thick and stodgy that one slice is often enough, but you really will wish that you could eat more. The name translates as ‘breakfast cake‘ and the Dutch do usually enjoy the cake as part of the morning meal, but it really is a treat that can be enjoyed at any time of the day.
